Power BI October 2026 update: what matters for SMEs

Easy Insight Team ·

October's Power BI release is a quiet one, and that is good news for a small business. Reports get a built-in Gantt chart and dropdown slicers, both in preview. Surge protection now sees long refreshes while they run, so a busy capacity may push back earlier. And if you connect to Snowflake, BigQuery or Databricks, test the new ADBC drivers.

This covers Microsoft's Power BI October 2026 feature summary, checked against the Microsoft Learn "What's new" page (updated 2 November 2026). Our September update covers the FabCon-season release, and the 23 October roundup covers the AI Builder credit changes.

What has to be done this month?

One check, and only if you use cloud data platforms. Microsoft is replacing the ODBC drivers behind several connectors with ADBC (Apache Arrow database connectivity). According to Microsoft Learn (updated 26 October 2026), Microsoft planned to begin enabling the ADBC tenant setting by default "in phases" from October 2026, then to start removing ODBC drivers from the service in early Q1 2027. Both dates are marked planned, not confirmed.

The connectors affected include Snowflake, Google BigQuery, Databricks, Azure Databricks, Dremio, Impala and Spark. Refreshes through an on-premises gateway stay on ODBC, but Learn says this is "a deferral, not a permanent opt-out". In our view the sensible move is a test refresh of your most important report with ADBC on, before Microsoft flips it for you.

Is there finally a built-in Gantt chart?

Yes, in preview. Learn describes a new core visual that "displays task durations, progress, and milestones on a time axis", with category colours, extra task columns and a zoom axis. Until now a Gantt chart in Power BI meant an AppSource custom visual, which many IT policies block or never review.

To try it, open Power BI Desktop, go to Options, then Preview features, tick the Gantt chart and restart. For project or job-tracking reports this could retire a third-party visual. We would wait for general availability before rebuilding a report other people rely on.

What changed for slicers?

Two preview items make slicers easier to use on a crowded page. List slicers gain a dropdown mode with "dismissible selection pills" and search formatting, so a long list of customers or sites no longer eats half the canvas. And a Show selected first option pins active selections to the top of list and button slicers, so users can see what is filtered without scrolling.

Both help with the layout advice in our dashboard design principles guide: fewer, consistently placed slicers that take up less room.

Why might surge protection behave differently?

This is the change most likely to show up without anyone touching a setting. Learn says semantic models now report capacity unit usage "continuously during long-running background operations instead of primarily at completion". Surge protection, which rejects or delays background work when a Fabric or Premium capacity is too busy, can now act on that in-progress usage.

For a small firm on an F2 or F4 capacity, a big overnight refresh may now be delayed or rejected earlier rather than throttling everything after it finishes. Microsoft says "no settings changes are required". If refreshes start failing with capacity messages, check your surge protection settings before buying a bigger SKU. Our Fabric pricing guide has the UK capacity prices if you do.

What are the quieter wins?

Change Status Why an SME cares
Plot area background colour for bar, column, line, combo, scatter and other charts, with conditional formatting Generally available Shade a chart red or green against target without a workaround
Bar, column and line charts auto-expand hierarchy axes, including fields supplied by field parameters Generally available One chart can drill by the field a user picks
Personal bookmarks keep resized and reordered table and matrix columns Generally available Finance users stop rebuilding their layout every time
Report page tabs show an icon when a page has a mobile layout New this month Quick check of which pages work on a phone
Power BI tabs in Teams show the content name, last refresh time and sensitivity label New this month People can see how fresh the numbers are
The Power BI Report skill in Skills for Fabric can add and format custom visuals Generally available Useful mainly to teams already using AI authoring tools

All six are from the Learn "What's new" page as of November 2026. New to field parameters? Start with our field parameters guide.

What about Fabric and Ignite?

This post covers the Power BI release. As of 6 November 2026 we have found no published UK price for the F0 capacity announced in September, so our earlier caution stands: test it with a spend limit. Microsoft Ignite runs 17 to 20 November, and our Ignite 2026 watchlist lists what to look out for.

What would we do this week?

Run one test refresh with ADBC on if you use Snowflake, BigQuery or Databricks. Update Power BI Desktop to the October build. Try the Gantt chart and dropdown slicer on a copy of a report, not the live one.

For help with any of it, our Power BI consultancy and wider data practice do this work.

Frequently asked questions

Does Power BI now have a built-in Gantt chart?

Yes, in preview as of the October 2026 release. It is a core visual, so no AppSource download is needed. Turn it on under Preview features in Power BI Desktop's options, then restart Desktop. Preview features can change before general availability.

What changed for surge protection in October 2026?

Semantic models now report capacity usage continuously during long-running background operations, such as large refreshes, instead of mainly when they finish. Surge protection can therefore reject or delay work earlier. Microsoft says no settings changes are required.

Do we need to do anything about ADBC drivers?

If you connect Power BI to Snowflake, BigQuery or Databricks, test a refresh with ADBC turned on. Microsoft planned to start enabling the setting by default in phases from October 2026. Gateway refreshes stay on ODBC for now, but Microsoft calls that a deferral.
